Warmth that gets under your skin

Warmth makes us feel comfortable in our skin. It signals even the smallest differences in the ambient temperature thanks to its cold and heat sensors and makes us appreciate warmth very much, especially in cooler environments. This phenomenon can easily be observed in the attraction of a campfire. People are drawn to it like a magnet.

However, it doesn't require a large fire to warm you up. Even our SPIN tabletop fireplace has been proven to provide just this feel-good effect on the skin, because it radiates pleasant warmth from the first minute and can even be used indoors.

The following article explains exactly how the heat output of our bioethanol tabletop fireplace behaves and why the air humidity also plays a significant part.

Why is warmth important to us?


Heat is considered one of the oldest remedies. Its gently calming and relaxing effect on the body is well known. At the same time, heat is known for its stimulating effect on metabolic processes, blood circulation and the immune system. Deeply anchored in us, we associate it with a feeling of security, safety and well-being

The most important source of warmth for all life on earth is the sun, and especially in the seasons when the sun warms us less, we look for alternatives. There is a whole range of natural objects and technical devices, each of which differs in its heat output.

What does heat output mean?

Heat is the energy transferred between two systems due to different levels of temperature. Its power is measured in watts. The greater the wattage, the more power, the more heat is emitted every second.

However, in order to be able to emit heat, energy must first be supplied to the heat source. In the case of fire, the energy of the fuel (e.g. candle wax, wood, coal, bioethanol) is converted into heat as well as light and released into the environment. The power varies considerably and starts at 35 W for a tea light, which provides minimal heat. The SPIN tabletop fireplace, on the other hand, emits up to 2500 W (when using höfats bioethanol fuel gel) and thus provides pleasant warmth all around from the first minute.

What do we perceive as warm?

It is a well-known fact that we feel more heat as the temperature rises. However, the temperature is not the only decisive factor for the perceived warmth and the associated feel-good factor, but also the humidity. A sauna infusion illustrates very clearly how a sudden increase in humidity catapults the perceived warmth upwards.

The same effect also occurs at lower room temperatures, i.e. increased humidity can lead to air being perceived as even warmer and more pleasant, as the following graph illustrates.

The area marked in yellow here indicates the feel-good range of the heat sensation. It shows that even a slight increase in temperature and humidity thanks to the SPIN tabletop fireplace can achieve the same feel-good level that only a considerably higher temperature increase at lower humidity would achieve. Conversely, this means: Heating is not everything, it is more a matter of finding the right mix of temperature and humidity!

Particularly in cooler seasons, we suffer even physically from too low air humidity in rooms. When using SPIN, a small amount of water vapour is released in the bioethanol combustion process, which increases the humidity in the room. Bioethanol for a clean and effective fuel


Just as important as the heat output is the calorific value of the respective fuel. This indicates how much heat is released when 1kg of the substance is completely burnt, since part of the energy is required for the combustion process itself or is emitted in the form of light and cannot be completely converted into heat.

SPIN tabletop fireplaces are operated exclusively with höfats' natural bioethanol, which has an extremely high calorific value compared to other fuels. This means that significantly more heat is emitted when burning the same amount of bioethanol compared to other fuels.
